Showers, rain and possibly thunderstorms ahead this week, after a dry and sunny start, though also a very warm and humid spell.

Quite a lot of uncertainty on details, but quite a bit of fun ahead if you like downpours, as I do.

The general picture sees high pressure still in control, but two area of low pressure – our to our south-west and one to our north-west are going to merge and slowly cross the UK during the week ahead – which will then pave the way for another low pressure system into the weekend.

Monday will be a pleasant day though, with spells of sunshine for much of the day, a bit of fair-weather and high cloud around at times. Warm, reaching around 23’C though becoming notably breezy by the afternoon. Mostly clear skies overnight, down to around 13’C.

Tuesday sees more in the way of sunshine once more, though a bit of cloud floating around at times, and a very small chance of a shower. Very warm and becoming humid too, despite the breeze, reaching around 26’C. One or two scattered heavy, thundery showers overnight – say a 25% of catching one, and a fairly warm night, down to around 16’C.

Wednesday is a bit of a tricky day to forecast as we’ll be in an unstable flow, but whether showers break out is uncertain. Probably quite a bit of cloud around, especially in the morning, though a few bright spells, sunny spells or at least some hazy sunshine more likely in the afternoon, with around a 30% chance of catching a heavy/very heavy downpour, perhaps with thunder. Again very warm and humid, around 25’C or so – some uncertainty on temperatures also. A band of more organised showery rain, likely heavy/very heavy and possibly thundery will move up from the south overnight – though showery so you might miss out. Again fairly warm, down to around 17’C.

By Thursday low pressure is definitely in control, though still centred to our south-west.

Again quite a lot of uncertainty on details – it is one of those set-ups where rain timing will be determined quite close to the time, say the day before.

But broadly I guess quite cloudy to start, perhaps still some of the overnight thundery rain to clear depending on the timing of the overnight rain. Then more likely some sunny spells or hazy sunshine with a chance of thundery downpours later in the day. Probably still very warm and humid, roughly around 25’C, but very give and take. Thundery showers again possible overnight – but uncertain – latest modelling suggests that batch will be to our easy but too unstable a flow to be certain at this stage.

Friday is again uncertain on details but I’d suggest broadly its a case of sunny spells, or hazy sunshine and variable amounts of cloud – with some heavy/very heavy showers around. Probably still in the warm and humid air, around 24’C.

Details for the bank holiday weekend are likewise uncertain but there will be showers and rain.

Saturday is likely fresher as the warm and humid air will have moved away with that low pressure system. Showers very possible, if not probable, perhaps a spell of showery rain – though I stress uncertain once more. Some sunshine also very possible, and roughly around 21’C.

Sunday probably sees the next low pressure system arriving with at the very least some heavy showers, but perhaps general heavy rain – thunder possible also. Timing uncertain so maybe it arrives late in the day and we get a fair chunk of the day pleasant with warm/very warm hazy sunshine – but also maybe it arrives in the morning and, yeah, wet.

Bank Holiday Monday might not be too bad as that second low pressure of the week will move through much quicker – broadly sunny spells, some cloud and a chance of a shower or two. Roughly around 21’C.

Probably there is more rain at times in the first week of September, but also some warm/very warm and sunny days could be mixed in too.

Appreciate there is quite a lot of uncertainty on timing of rain/downpours ahead – I’ll try to fill in the gaps if I get time this week, and there will be a full forecast on Thursday morning too.
