Monday 22nd June 2026 – Heatwave & Thunderstorm Update

A crazy thunderstorm developed this afternoon towards Somerset and travelled through Bath – there is still some going to the north of Reading, though mostly its turned into general heavy rain.

Well, I assume it is raining, though I guess it’s possible the rain that is showing on the radar is evaporating before hitting the ground.

So later this evening/overnight, this feature may pep up further – I’d suggest a 20% chance of developing back into a thunderstorm of the elevated variety. Timing and where/if all uncertain and will just be a case of seeing what happens.

Torrential downpours and very frequent lightning are possible somewhere over central/south-east England overnight – I guess a 20% chance in your location. Maybe nothing happens at all and there’s just a bit of showery rain.

Incidentally, this little feature looks like it may have a knock-on impact on maximum temperatures – say closer to 34’C tomorrow, and “only” 38’C on Wednesday/Thursday now more likely. The models this morning were showing 40’C in places. Still could happen…but less likely now.

Also Friday/Saturday are now more likely to be somewhat hotter than previously forecast. Some models are even suggesting that Friday is now the hottest day.

It’s all pretty fast-moving and confusing at the moment. Don’t be surprised if things change further. I’ll keep you informed as best I can, but also do refer to the Met Office.
